In concentrates, shatter is a distinct type of cannabis weed wax. This type of concentrate was named as such since it is fragile, it shatters like glass.
For the reason of having a less messy and easy to manipulate kind of concentrate or extract, shatter wax is one of the most popular concentrates in Canada. As described, shatter is a type of concentrate that resembles a solid, wax-like texture but typically shatters into pieces.
Before we begin talking about shatter strains, let us review some topics related to shatter.

Dissecting Shatter

Shatter usually appears as translucent, and its color can range from a bright to dark yellow shade.
All kinds of shatter may appear to have an identical consistency, but if you look at their textures, it can greatly differ from taffy-like/snap-and-pull to exceptionally brittle.

You can have some insight into the various cannabinoid profile of shatter by simply looking at its consistency.
This means that a shatter that’s is low on THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) will be more brittle than a product that contains a high THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content that tends to be sappier.

At room temperature, THCA is solid, thus yielding a fragile concentrate, whereas THC is a sappy oil, giving shatter a more viscous consistency.

A Brief History of Shatter

Shatter is a new development in the cannabis industry, its basis is derived from the old practice of hashish making. Shatter was produced back in the late 1990s wherein the process of modern cannabis concentrate production was being refined.

The book “Cannabis Alchemy: The Art of Modern Hash Making,” a second edition of the 1973 original book authored by D. Gold in 1989, contained the first full documentation on hash making.

In 1990, the second edition of the original 1977 book “Marijuana Chemistry: Genetics Processing and Potency” was published. Authored by the medical technologist Michael Starks, this contains a precise explanation of the process of hash production.

Canadian cannabis manufacturer BudderKing, by the late 1990s, first marketed budder and shatter. In 2003, the products hit the shelves of various dispensaries.

The techniques and methods for making these products were announced in Cannabis Culture magazine.

How To Make Shatter

DISCLAIMER: FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY PURPOSES, THIS MUST BE ONLY DONE BY REGISTERED PROFESSIONALS AS THE PROCESS AND METHODS CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND CANNABIS IS STILL ILLEGAL IN SOME AREAS.

For shatter making, the various precision machines need to be operated by licensed professionals who have the skills and know the adequate precautionary safety measures.

The processes and methods concerning shatter making are the same as other concentrates. The only distinguishing traits appear only in the post-extraction process.

Your input material can be anything from your shatter strain flowers to cannabis remnants such as shake or trim.
You can make shatter with a myriad of solvents, one of the most common methods is a butane hash oil extraction (BHO). You can also utilize LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

  1. I’ve actually never tried shatter before. I usually try and stick to the natural form of cannabis as a flower. But as my tolerance grows I may have to dabble (get it?) in some concentrates.
