Smalls/Popcorn

What are Smalls/Popcorn Buds?

Let's learn about Smalls/Popcorn. Because cannabis is a plant, growing it requires a bit of art and science. Depending on how the plant is grown, some parts of the plant may not receive as much sunlight and fresh air as others. These areas are generally closer to the ground where it is more difficult for light to penetrate, especially when the cannabis plant is flowering and forming clumps of leaves.

When they are then harvested and grown, a cluster of smaller shoots remains. Growers don't want to throw them away since they are still usable, but they are definitely not as high quality as regular size dried flower.

Therefore, many growers sell them to dispensaries and pharmacies at lower prices. The end result is the “smalls” or “popcorn buds” found at places like King Tut’s.

Pros and Cons of Smalls/Popcorn Buds

Just because small weeds aren't the best thing doesn't mean they should be completely ignored. Depending on your budget and cannabis tolerance, popcorn buds can actually be a great option for your next smoke session. Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of these products.

Pro: lower cost

If you want to save a lot of money, you can't always buy high-quality flowers. Luckily, popcorn buds come from the same plant and therefore provide similar psychoactive experiences. Plus, you can buy more of them for the same price as the premium version. This allows you to put the same amount of weed in your bowl or joint without paying the “high” price (pun intended).

Disadvantage: May not offer the same experience

The reason small weeds are not considered “premium” is because they are essentially the smallest weeds in the litter. While larger buds contain the majority of the trichomes, terpenes, and THC, popcorn buds get the rest.

That doesn't mean you can't get high from these little nuggets. In many cases you can have pretty much the same experience as with a full size flower.

However, because popcorn sprouts are not as large, they generally contain fewer of the active ingredients that get you high. Therefore, there will likely be a noticeable difference, especially if you smoke both versions (but not at the same time).

Pro: Easier to Grind

A smaller size can be advantageous for several reasons. First, if you want to bring marijuana with you, it may be easier to add a few popcorn buds to the container rather than a whole flower. Second, when you grind and roll your joint, you won't have any excess material to save for later. Instead, you can just destroy a few Smalls/Popcorn Buds and move on without wasting anything.
