PICKING YOUR HIGH

When you visit your local dispensary, especially if you are new to smoking, you will most like expect to get advice from a budtender AKA weed sommelier. However, in the last few years, marijuana has been treated like a fine wine with hundreds of strains to choose from, and even with some “expert” knowledge, picking your high can be a bit of an intimidating experience

So, how do you choose the best strain for your Cannabis experience?

For simplicity purposes, let’s imagine your strains on a spectrum; with ultimate relaxation on one end (Indica), and energy on the other (sativa). You can choose your desired experience based on where it falls between the two ends.

But if only it WERE that simple. Marijuana is now known to contains more than 80 cannabinoids that affect your brain and body differently. The concentrations of cannabinoids within the strain will produce a different impact. Understanding the strains as much as possible will help you decide for yourself what bud is best for you, your needs and lifestyle.

The Cannabis strains of 2018  are stepping up the concept of getting high, therefore, we feel it’s imperative to offer our fellow stoner friends some guidance in choosing their high.

Disclaimer! It’s highly doubtful you will find your “perfect” strain the first time – you are going to need to experiment a little #kushdiet

Each Cannabis strain, even if they are from the same species such as; Indica, Sativa or Hybrid, will effects the brain and body differently. We will explain the three main cannabis species and their differences, but first, it is important to remember that the different “high” is largely due to the percentage levels of THC and CBD – the two main components in Cannabis.

INDICA, SATIVA AND HYBRID…

INDICA CANNABIS STRAIN
THE Indica strain is the cannabis that will give you the infamous body high, Some describe it as “couch-locked”, providing physical sedation and relaxation effects.

SATIVA CANNABIS STRAIN
Sativa is known for its ability to get you high that has refreshing and uplifting affects beneficial for physical or social activities. Unlike Indica, the Sativa strain delivers a stimulating and energizing high affecting your mind more than your body.

HYBRID CANNABIS STRAIN
Hybrid strains will generally fall between Sativa/Indica spectrum, depending on the genetics passed down by the parent strains. Hybrids can be put into three basic categories:

Sativa-dominant Hybrids: Cerebral high with some relaxing body effects.
Even Hybrids: strains for those looking to balance a head and body high.
Indica-dominant Hybrids: Providing a full-body high and relaxing head high.

SO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU?

ENERGY

Generally speaking, Sativa-dominant strains are much more likely to produce energy and creative thinking due to the higher levels of THC. These strains are a popular choice for social gatherings and public appearances however, they are known to cause anxiety or paranoia in some individuals at high doses.

Sativa strains are best suited for daytime use and party time.

RELAXATION

Indica-dominant strains will cause a much more relaxed and sleepy sensation then the Sativa, which can be used to treat insomnia and sleep apnea.

Indica strains are best suited for nighttime.
Some of the more popular marijuana strains for sleep include BC God Bud, White Rhino, Granddaddy Purple, and my personal favourite – Violator Kush  which has a musty, earthy smell and taste and gives the user a strong body buzz. Get your Violator kush here!

PAIN MANAGEMENT

THC, one of the many components in marijuana, has been proven to significantly reduce pain by binding with pain-sensing receptors in the body. however, CBD (Another cannabinoid), has also been shown to reduce pain and inflammation without causing an unwanted “high” produced by THC.

Although some prefer the “highness” CBD, the best analgesic effects will typically come from strains that contain a combination of the two.

ANXIETY

Research has confirmed that low doses of THC can lower anxiety levels by binding with CB1 receptors. However, taken in higher doses THC seems to have an opposite effect. Instead of reducing your anxiety, higher levels of THC might make it worse.

For marijuana strains that treat anxiety, look for strains with low THC levels and higher CBD levels, which has been shown to both reduce anxiety and counter the effects of THC.

Whatever goal you want achieve, wether to ease pain or enjoy a game of cards against humanity at your friends next dinner party, there is a cannabis strain for you. Keep experimenting to find the best experience possible.

  1. I seriously love being able to pick and choose strains. Back when it was just whatever my guy had it sucked. Now I choose a hybrid or sativa for during the day, indica for night. It’s awesome being able to control that!

  2. I would say the best part about using moms vs local dealers is consistent strains. Its so great to be about to have the right variety on hand for what you are needing

    1. good point! i know many who don’t bother to think ahead and end up buying local – and not what they really want.

  3. I find every strain somewhat unique and like exploring all different genetics, though I’d say I have a slight preference towards the indica “body highs”.

    1. the difference between the two (sativa/indica) is so relevant. experimenting between both is highly recommended to find the perfect fit.

  4. It truly is a liberating experience having a selection of strains compared to taking what was available Most importantly it will allow persons with medical conditions to find the exact strain and method of intake that works for them. Good post ++

  5. Keep in mind though the same strain can be completely different if grown by two different growers.

  6. Been trying to get into the sativa lately, so far I’m just getting less stoned lol.

  7. Love Girl Scout cookies or green crack pre workout. Usually a CBD before an exam, heavy indica before bed – death bubba >
